Topical OTC Drug Patches

The term topical delivery generally refers to medications applied to the skin that utilize passive diffusion of an active ingredient to produce a local effect (in contrast to transdermal delivery, in which the medication penetrates the primary barrier of the skin to reach systemic circulation or deeper underlying tissue.) Types of topical OTC monograph drug patches we develop include pain patches formulated with lidocaine or other active ingredients for the relief of joint pain or back pain. M&C Specialties works with our clients to determine the appropriate active ingredient and concentration, adhesive system, face stock, releaser liner, and inactive materials for their unique consumer healthcare solutions. Inactive ingredients can include any materials that are Generally Recognized as Safe by the US FDA and are not advertised to cure or relieve a specific disease or condition. Once a product is defined, we develop samples in the lab and send them out for customer approval. We manage all stability testing procedures for the development-stage product, including accelerated age testing and other analytical measures. In addition, we oversee all regulatory aspects of the development process, including establishing a National Drug Code for the product and applying for a customer labeler code if needed.
